Eco Committee Visits Climate Change Gaia Exhibition
Eco committee representatives had an opportunity to attend the famous Gaia exhibition by Luke Jerram at the Reading town hall accompanied by Mrs Kaur on Monday 12th June.
Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter and created from detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, the artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions.
The exhibition has a model of Earth, exactly 1.8 million times smaller than our planet, with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface, rotating in the centre of the exhibition room. Standing 211m away from the artwork, the public are able to see the Earth as it appears from the Moon. From a distance, the Earth is just a pale blue dot.
The room was filled with people of all ages which indicated that climate change is relevant to all, as it affects all of us. The overarching theme of the exhibition is to bring back the focus on our planet in terms of biodiversity, flora and fauna, global warming, and encompassing it all, climate change. Taking the theme forward, students and Eco reps in some forms will be adopting a plant.
Student’s comments:
“Seeing the world as if from space gave us insight into the beautiful planet which we are destroying.”
“An informative trip with a beautiful significant art installation.”
“The best thing about it was the feeling of unity in looking up at the earth where we all live, without the divide of countries or cultures or politics; just one earth filled with beauty and bursting with unique and wonderful creatures which we must all do our bit to protect.”
“From young to old, lots of people came to this exhibition to truly marvel at the wonders of our planet.”
