Frisbee Club Update
The Kendrick Ultimate club (otherwise known as our "Frisbee" club) took part in UK Junior Women's Indoor Nationals (JWIN) this term for the first time.
Kendrick was one of the few schools who entered a team into both the Under 14s and Under 17s categories, and the support shown by each team to each other during the tournament was such a credit to them. Both teams cheered each other on and embodied the 'Spirit of the Game' which is instrumental to a self-refereed sport like Ultimate.
Even though this was their first tournament, we had multiple other teams and coaches approach us to congratulate the teams on their kindness and supportive nature towards their opponents. Students frequently congratulated opponents on good plays and had good discussions on rules where something was disagreed about.
Each team developed a lot of Ultimate skills and knowledge that weekend with some highlights for both teams.
Our students in the Under 17's learnt so much at the weekend about formation and marking skills. Their organisation was also brilliant, such that by the end of the day they were reading the schedule, arriving at the correct pitches and starting up games completely independently. I was particularly proud of how quickly they picked up new rules and game practices. They were showing better rules knowledge than many more experienced players.
The Under 14s team performed excellently and were showing Ultimate skills above their age category. Immediately, they were pushing their opponents to very tight scorelines and quickly started to win their matches. They achieved 5th place, up from a starting seeding of 8th. This was an impressive achievement, especially for a first tournament.
The students were energetic and enthusiastic all day and I look forward to taking students again in the future!
