Year 12 Team Wins Geography Innovation Challenge

Last term, two groups of Geography students at Kendrick were invited to take part in the Innovation Challenge at Reading Boys.
We were asked to create a solution that balances the need for homes for a growing population with the damage caused to the environment by the construction industry, taking into consideration the current situation and challenges.
During the research and design process, it was inspiring to learn how hard today's scientists are working to protect our planet for the future. Working with my team on our idea for flexible housing units led us down many pathways of research; from incorporating ancient practices, such as a traditional Moroccan waterproofing technique, to modern technology, like 3D printing of hemp concrete. We loved channelling our passion for protecting the environment into a real-world solution. The other Kendrick group’s idea to use sheep wool for insulation was also innovative. After explaining that they would be taking advantage of low prices thanks to excess supply and how that would support the British agricultural industry. We were so impressed by the depth of consideration they had put into their plan.
Presenting our ideas at Reading Boys was nerve-wracking but so rewarding… especially after the team I was in won! Holding up to a grilling by both Reading Boys students and teachers (and returning the favour with great enthusiasm) was high pressure, but it was a great experience in understanding the importance of solid background knowledge to defend our work. Credit to Mrs Wheeler - our geographical understanding came to good use!
We had so many questions about the Reading Boys' group’s idea of building a concrete island on the ocean, but it was interesting to see the range of approaches taken.
Thank you so much to the Geography department at Reading Boys for giving us this amazing opportunity and to Mrs Wheeler for taking us!
