Chess Club Report July 2024

Chess has been very popular throughout the year, with the standard of play steadily increasing as students take part in online tournaments as well as a live competition.

Throughout the school year there have been 2 online tournaments:

ShePlaysToWin: for Girls Schools across the UK, taking place once a short term. The KENDRICK team have dominated play, always amongst the top teams. They are in overall FIRST place after the final tournament which took place on June 26th.

The 'Interschools Chess Tournament' was every two weeks, and much tougher, involving any school in the UK. The Kendrick team steadily improved their position, from 15th of the 35+ competing schools, to a final position of 6th in the last tournament.

Well done to all who have taken part in these online tournaments – these require quick responses, sometimes with 10 or more matches played within the 1 hour allocated. Consistently good scores have come from Riya, Ananya, Nidhi, Chelsea, Nivi, Joanne and Arushi.

And to finish the year, a team took part in the Reading InterSchools Tournament, a six-round competition held at Blessed Hugh Faringdon School on Thursday 4th July. The team of 10 was Arushi, Saswathi, Joanne, Divija, Nivi, Shriya, Nidhi, Ananya, Riya and Sanvi . All played extremely well, with everyone winning more than half of their games, and 4 scored 5 wins out of the 6 rounds. Overall, the team came 2nd out of the 5 schools, only just behind Reading school.

Will any of our Kendrick players go on to government careers in the future?

Did you know that 3 women in the new cabinet were chess players?

Rachel Reeves, the new Chancellor, was a British Under-14 girls chess champion.

Angela Eagle (a Home Office minister) won the British Girls Under 18 title when she was just 15, and her twin sister, Maria Eagle (a Defence Minister) also played:
