The Poets’ Society Launches Its Fourth Anthology

The Poets’ Society, The Poets’ Editorial Team and The Poets’ Communications Team proudly present the fourth poetry anthology! This special launch celebrates the importance of taking writing seriously and this anthology marks how poetry has evolved at Kendrick School over the years. One of my missions as the founder of this society was to peel back the layers that young people might have to write creatively and to re-gift this as an option for them to express what is important to them and their world. The love for poetry and the number of students who have actively participated in it through competitions, author workshops, seminars, and talks has increased massively – which is fantastic!

When we look through books that show us a glimpse of history, one thing is clear – we only know something because someone, at some point, has chosen to write it down and share it. History and literature rely on the brave act of what has happened. In poetry, the expressing of this takes the reader to another dimension where the inner world of the poet is explored thoughtfully. Those who have expressed their thoughts and emotions more eloquently, effectively, persuasively, influentially have then become timeless and impacted humans for centuries to come.

Writing is similar to praying – you think, you feel, you reflect, you hope and you act. You make a decision and step forward – something the world needs more and more from us as the headlines worsen and tragedies across the globe are unveiled. It is a form of being and not just an act. One thing you will notice in the poets at Kendrick is that they have grown to become poets and not just to write poetry. It isn’t solely a form of self-expression but a living thing – your thoughts are alive, you are alive and what you think often turns into what you choose to do, which eventually forms who you become. Loving the process, learning to re-draft, learning to critique and unpick what you believe and think, changing how you write or choose to express yourself, searching for what matters, analysing your own thoughts, crafting your criticism meaningfully, and making use of this purposefully, makes life more meaningful.

Cycles’ was the theme of the anthology this year and this anthology explores the intricate way humans live through rhythms, systems, patterns – and not in isolation. You will find such a varied set of poems and, hopefully, will feel electrified by the brilliance of the words expressed. I am grateful to everyone who has helped: the poets and editors. From poets who have been a part of this journey since Year 10 to poets who have never written a poem before, thank you for the privilege of being part of your journey, your writing, your inner worlds. This is my final anthology at Kendrick School, and I am delighted to share this joy with you all for the final time.

Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.’ ~ Rumi
