Harpist in The National Youth Orchestra
During the first week of October, I was informed that I had achieved a place as a harpist in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain! Across the country there are only four places available for the harp, so I’m delighted to have got a place. The audition process was long and tough. It involved preparing two contrasting solo pieces and performing orchestral excerpts set by the tutors on the audition panel. However, it was a fantastic process to go through as it helps to build resilience and strength.
The NYO runs three residential courses over the year - Winter, Spring and Summer. These residential courses last for about two weeks, and involve staying in universities or schools around the country with the rest of the orchestra.
The NYO performs in famous concert halls, some of which include the Royal Albert Hall, Festival Hall and Barbican. We also get to share our passion for music whilst visiting primary and secondary schools around the country, hoping to inspire younger people to get involved in the world of music making.
This will be an amazing experience to have, as I can challenge and push myself by playing some really difficult repertoire whilst playing alongside other exceptional musicians. I’m also fortunate to be principal harpist for the Spring residency this year, and I’m really looking forward to getting started in December!
