Remembrance Day Events
The main reason for Remembrance Day is the opportunity it gives us to acknowledge and appreciate the people, men and women, in the armed forces, as well as civilians, whose lives were taken as a result of conflict. We endeavour this year, as we have done every year, to remember those who have served our country, our way of life, our ideals and values and in that service have sacrificed their lives and families to give that service.
On Sunday Ms Kattirtzi attended the Remembrance Service at Reading School Chapel at the invitation of The Revd. Dr Evans, the Headmaster of Reading School. Amongst those attending were CCF of Reading and Kendrick School. The service honoured the men and women who served and died in the wars. Amongst these were three Reading School Boys and two Kendrick School Boys, who were referred to as the Old Kendricks. These young men were no more than 20 years old when they fought and died in the service of their country. Ms Kattirtzi laid a wreath for those young Kendricks and other Kendricks who died in the South African war.
On Monday 11th November, our assembly was an act of Remembrance to remember those who have died in wars: World War 1, World War 2 and other conflicts in the 20th and 21st centuries. Sudiksha and Joshika focused on the theme of Service, which is the theme of the British Legion this year. Outside the hall is a display that our librarians, Mrs Williamson and Mr Kassianos have put up entitled, 'Service' and 'Service Not Self'
At Kendrick, our strong values, and beliefs, remind and encourage us to be kind and respectful to one another, to be tolerant and understanding, to make our school a safe place, a place where we can find and provide refuge for ourselves and others. The assembly ended with the words of a prayer from the service on Sunday:
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
At 11:00 am, students and staff stopped in silence while Year 12 student, Connie, played The Last Post.
